Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira and Andres Carne de Res Restaurant

Our last day in Bogotá, Dan and Marlene brought us north of Bogotá to visit a large salt mine in the town of Zipaquira (Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira). Within the many large tunnels of the mine were cathedrals and visitors galore.

After the salt mine we drove to another town called Chia to eat at the world famous Andres Carne de Res. This place is hard to describe so look at the pics, but the meat and food was absolutely amazing!

NYE with Dan and Marlene! (Dan is Dave’s second cousin and lives in Bogotá for work). Notice their gatito, Bubba, on the kitchen counter 🙂

After an amazing dinner (cudos to Marlene) and champagne we headed out to a club to celebrate at midnight.

In the afternoon of January 1st we went to the “top” of Bogota to visit Mount Monserrate and view the city from 10,341 feet. At the top is also a monastery that overlooks the city.

Another recommended place to visit is the Gold Museum (Museo del Oro).

Another area we visited was La Candalaria which included Bolivar Square (Plaza de Bolívar). Here we saw the Primary Cathedral of Bogota, Palace of Justice, and National Capital.

From Bolivar Plaza we walked the small streets to a little cafe called Cafe Atico where we tried chicha (fermented beverage derived from maize).

On Friday, January 3rd we ate a nice dinner at Hooters (Joel and Dave’s idea), had some coffee and rum back at the hostel, then headed out to the Zona Rosa area to celebrate Christina’s birthday at midnight (January 4th). We actually spent the whole night at two different casinos and had a blast playing roullete! We came out around $65 up for the whole night 🙂
